When starting a landscaping, construction, or renovation project, one of the most common questions we hear is: "How much aggregate do I need?" Ordering the right amount is essential — too little can delay your project, and too much can lead to unnecessary costs.
At Lelo Aggregates, we’re here to help you get it right the first time. Here's a simple guide to calculating how much aggregate you need for your next project in North Wales.

Why Accurate Aggregate Calculation Matters
Saves time and money – no repeat orders or excess waste.
Keeps your project on track – avoids work stoppages.
Ensures even coverage – especially important for decorative aggregates.
The Basic Formula for Calculating Aggregate Volume
To calculate the amount of aggregate required, you need to work out the volume of the space you're filling.
The basic formula is:
Length (m) x Width (m) x Depth (m) = Cubic Metres (m³)
Step-by-Step Guide:
Measure the area – use metres for best accuracy.
Decide on the depth – common depths are:
50mm (0.05m) for decorative gravel
100mm (0.1m) for driveways or heavy-use areas
150-200mm (0.15-0.2m) for sub-bases or foundations
Use the formula to find your volume in cubic metres.
Example Calculation:
Let’s say you’re covering a garden path that’s 5m long, 1.5m wide, and you want a depth of 50mm (0.05m).
5m x 1.5m x 0.05m = 0.375m³
You’ll need approximately 0.375 cubic metres of aggregate.
Converting Cubic Metres to Tonnes
Aggregates are often sold by weight, so you might need to convert cubic metres into tonnes.
As a rough guide:
1 cubic metre of gravel = 1.4 to 1.5 tonnes
1 cubic metre of sand = 1.6 to 1.7 tonnes
1 cubic metre of crushed stone = 1.5 tonnes
Example:
0.375m³ of gravel x 1.5 = 0.56 tonnes (round up to 0.6 tonnes to be safe)
Quick Reference Depth Guide:
Depth | In Metres | In Millimetres |
25mm | 0.025m | 25mm |
50mm | 0.05m | 50mm |
75mm | 0.075m | 75mm |
100mm | 0.1m | 100mm |
150mm | 0.15m | 150mm |
